Lettering Works Business Journal - September in Review
Business Journal: a place to celebrate wins & reflect - 45th Edition
September’s highlights included attending the Brand New Conference, working on a handful of fun client projects, celebrating being engaged for one year, and ordering a new MacBook Pro.
The Big Wins
Attended the Brand New Conference, Brand Talks, the WBDC Midwest Conference, and Sunnyside Chats - all in Chicago. I connected with more inspiring creatives, designers, and woman-owned businesses than I can count.
Celebrated one year of being engaged to Daniel! We also finally revisited some wedding planning tasks after essentially taking the summer off. (If you are new here, you can read more about our engagement in Granada, Spain here.)
Rock and geology-themed Corporate Family Day at the Field Museum. Pictures show Kelsey Overberg, Emily Wagner, a close-up of the custom “Science Rocks” sticker and Field Museum Scientists Paul Mayer and Jim Hostein.
General Updates + Accomplishments:
Got a first wholesale order from the Chicago Architectural Center Design Store. I also restocked countless favorite shops including the Milwaukee Art Museum, The Mütter Museum at the College of Physicians of Philadelphia, and even the Peoria Riverfront Museum, after connecting with their new buyer.
Worked on all of the client projects. From fun rush projects for KraftHeinz and the Field Museum to making lots of progress on open branding projects to starting more work with a favorite large, corporate client, it was a busy month!
Completed business maintenance tasks like submitting my ACDBE/DBE certification renewal, paying quarterly estimated taxes, and even ordering a new laptop!
Reflected on early career successes, including making the front page of the Peoria Journal Star newspaper and receiving a Small Business Excellence Award from the City of Peoria in September 2017.
Accepted in the Typism 9 Book. My piece “Always Be Planning Your Next Trip” will be included in this year’s publication, which you can pre-order here.
Restocked my promotional cards alongside a handful of popular products. I also mailed in my giveaway items (Midwest Nice stickers) for the upcoming MSA Midwest Museum Conference in Indianapolis.
Enjoyed the last days of summer in Chicago. From celebrating at our friends’ wedding in the suburbs to catching live music in the park and attending all of the Logan Square Farmers Markets each Sunday to coworking with friends to attending our first Broadway in Chicago show as season ticket holders, we not only soaked up the nice weather but enjoyed many of our favorite things alongside time with our favorite people.
This has been one of the few months we’ve spent entirely in Chicago! With so many client projects going on and conferences (all conveniently in Chicago), it was a month full of equal parts working hard and playing hard.
In October, I’m most looking forward to celebrating my birthday with friends and family, attending the MSA Midwest Conference, and preparing to take a two-week vacation in Paris.
Thank you for being here, for supporting me, and for following along with my entrepreneurial journey.
